New Favorite Cartoon

Mushi-shi.

It's not a shoot-'em up cartoon, but I really like how it incorporates what I assume to be Shinto-esque mythological elements. As with the PSII game Okami, which uses actual Shinto folklore, I am struck by the level of melancholy that it imparts: where human suffering comes from spirits neither malevolent nor evil, and whom you develop a certain level of sympathy via their own backstories. It is a very compelling narrative backdrop.

This is of course a stark contrast to Western religious tradition, be they Judeo-Christian, Zoroasterian or Manichean.
